Music therapy

“Music plays an important role in our everyday lives. It can be exciting or calming, joyful or poignant, can stir memories and powerfully resonate with our feelings, helping us to express them and to communicate with others.

Music therapy uses these qualities and the musical components of rhythm, melody and tonality to provide a means of relating within a therapeutic relationship. In music therapy, people work with a wide range of accessible instruments and their voices to create a musical language which reflects their emotional and physical condition; this enables them to build connections with their inner selves and with others around them.

Music therapists support the client’s communications with a bespoke combination of improvised or pre-composed instrumental music and voice, either sung or spoken. Individual and group sessions are provided in many settings such as hospitals, schools, hospices and care homes, and the therapist’s approach is informed by different theoretical frameworks, depending on their training and the health needs which are to be met.”

Tempo Tots provides music therapy for individuals, families and groups of children in the Camden area, including sessions for children with additional needs, those experiencing illness and life-limiting conditions, attachment and bonding difficulties including adoptive and foster families, and families experiencing post-natal depression. Home visits are available, as well as sessions for children’s centres and nurseries. Sessions are carried out by MA-qualified, HCPC-registered music therapists with DBS clearance.

Staff training

Making music with the very young is a rewarding activity. Doing it well and with confidence takes some planning and time. Tempo Tots offers practical courses for anyone working with (or who would like to work with) young children.

Our training programme is a comprehensive, accessible and thought-provoking resource for use in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Pre-Schools. These courses will give you the confidence to make music and to use music creatively across the curriculum. It is informed by the very latest thinking in music therapy, child-led, creative and active learning.

Early Years Practitioners tell us that they and their children have loved the songs, musical activities and ideas,
and throughout the visits have grown in confidence in using music more frequently.  If you are interested in
any of these services please do contact us and let us know your requirements, we are happy to meet and discuss your needs.
